Mediation is more than simple conversion of switch records into billing record format. To bill usage records
correctly, you need to be able to apply revenue assurance techniques, business intelligence and business rules
to the record creation process.

If mediation was a simple conversion of standard switch records to billing format, any mediation system could handle the
job, but that is not the case. Different equipment puts out different versions of AMA or other types of CDRs. Even
different versions or different setups of the same switch can be yield different data.

During the process of record conversion, aspects of the environment the switch operates in must be taken into
account; such as special processing for OCN traffic, special treatment of certain carriers or NPA-NXXs,
filtering out certain phone numbers, special handling of records based on trunk group, EAS area
or other condition.

Also, companies today need to handle call data from disparate sources; conventional switches,
softswitches, IP gateways and other subsystems. A mediation system must convert virtually any
